The weight lifting program was introduced in 2005 to provide our football players with the opportunity to improve their strength and consequently, enhance their performance on the field. We follow a very specific program called Bigger - Faster – Stronger (BFS). This is a nationally recognized program that is used throughout many Maine high school programs. BFS program will help improve each player as a football player, but also for other sports and for general good physical health.
We use three distinct lifts to measure a player’s progress. Those lifts are: bench, squat and power clean. When a player begins his program he will receive an individualized plan. Each week the player’s progress is monitored using BFS’ software program. This allows us to provide a very personalized training program for each athlete one which is designed and paced for his size and ability.
We recognize players when they achieve certain weight lifting goals. Players are eligible for memberships in various weight lifting club levels following testing. The following are the club levels:
500 lb Club
625 lb Club
750 lb Club
1000 lb Club
When a player reaches one of these goals, we have a brief ceremony in the weight room and present the player with a recognition T-shirt designating his club membership. Players take great pride in achieving these milestones.
We believe that weight training will help players prevent injuries while also participating as a group it helps build a sense of camaraderie among the team. This one of the unique elements which makes playing football such a lifelong memory among all who have played the game.
The weight lifting program is led by Coach Geary, with assistance from Coach Smith, Coach David Geary and Coach Fitzsimmons. If you want to learn more about our weight lifting program go to high school coaches’ contact page on this website and give any of the coaches a call.
